While working on a design for large hole blueberries, I made some with wildly exaggerated blossoming openings. The star like shape is simple but prominent. They ended up looking more like poppy pods than blueberries. I love this shape and will probably make more pod beads in different colors.

Last night I had the drive to experiment with something I have had on my mind for a long while. Often I’ve been asked, “can you make beads from glass bottles?” Grabbing my Smoking Loon bottle and hammer I hurried out to the garage to find out. I didn’t really have a plan. My thoughts were basically just to smash the glass and see how badly it would explode in the flame. This was not nearly as difficult as I imagined it would be. Guess I’m just a natural, or I had a lucky first session.

I have been looking for a transparent green that looks like this for a while. Vetrofond emerald green is very clean and does not foam up with bubbles. It’s also quite stiff, which is nice for certain techniques. I etched the shinny beads for a worn sea glass like look. The beads were in the etching solution for a fair amount of time. That may be why the have subtle striations. I will be experimenting with the solution, soaking beads for different lengths of time.

The longer you heat Moretti Dark Ivory in the flame the more crackles will develop. I would say I have heated this set moderately, the crackle effect can become more extreme.
The beads only appear to have crackles, the surface is smooth and the beads are durable.
